Beloved Children’s Animated Series Mr Benn to Be Adapted Into a Live Action Film
Kirk Jones plans a live-action adaptation of the beloved Mr Benn series, with casting later this year and production next year by UK-based companies.
- BAFTA-winning filmmaker Kirk Jones has been attached to write and direct a live-action film adaptation of the 1971 series Mr Benn, announced by 48 Films, BeaglePug Ltd, Jackpot Productions, and One Story High.
- Created by David McKee, the original 1971 animated series followed Mr Benn, an ordinary man who discovered extraordinary adventures via a magical costume shop, becoming a beloved staple of British children's television.
- The McKee said the project "has been close to our hearts for many years," with producers including Branwen Prestwood Smith, Mike Prestwood Smith, David Barron, Jack Whitehall, and Jones.
- Casting for the lead and supporting roles is scheduled to commence later this year, with Jones stating he was keen to work on a project that is "humorous and entertaining."
- Unlike a previously stalled film attempt by Erinfilm, which was set to star John Hannah and Ben Kinglsey, this adaptation currently has momentum as it moves into development.
