'I didn’t hesitate': Coworker and friend becomes kidney donor for Texas jail sergeant
A longtime friend and coworker volunteered to donate, and community fundraisers are helping cover costs as the sergeant prepares for surgery.
Bexar County Jail sergeant Joseph Vela is preparing for a life-changing kidney transplant, with Deputy Calder donating a kidney to his longtime friend and coworker.
Vela received the diagnosis in February, with doctors reporting his kidneys functioned at just 10%, forcing him to trade his badge for dialysis treatments limiting summer activities.
Deputy Calder, a friend for 15 years from the Bexar County Traffic Unit, immediately offered to donate upon hearing the news, stating, "I didn't hesitate because I know he would do the same for me."
Recently, Vela received encouraging news from his nurse coordinator regarding the procedure. "She said we have a tentative date for July 1," Vela said.
Community members are providing financial support through a fundraiser to assist with recovery costs as Vela looks forward to being "back at 100%" following the surgery.
