Huge fire rips through historic Big Mill in Staffordshire
An 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of arson after the fire gutted the six-storey Grade II listed Big Mill, which had been derelict for around 20 years, officials said.
- On Friday, a major fire erupted at the historic Big Mill in Leek, North Staffordshire, with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service deploying six engines to the scene at 21:22 GMT.
- The six-storey mill dates back to 1860 and has remained derelict since 2007; Labour councillor Bill Cawley previously warned about hazards and anti-social behaviour at the site, which has planning permission for 34 flats.
- Fire officials received 118 calls about the incident; on Saturday, crews remained on scene dealing with hotspots while Inrix reported the A523 Macclesfield Road blocked from Church Street to Churnet Way.
- Staffordshire Moorlands MP Dame Karen Bradley expressed sadness on Facebook, thanking emergency services; the fire service warned residents to keep windows shut as traffic was "making things difficult."
- While the building appeared "completely burned out," the Big Mill remains significant as one of the earliest mills of its scale; the site had previously seen two fires and flammable materials removal.
