Maple Leafs Agreed to Trade with Canadiens to Deal Matthew Knies, but Something Got in the Way
Elliotte Friedman said the proposed swap was invalid because the trade email arrived 60 seconds after the NHL deadline.
On Friday, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the trade sending Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies to the Montreal Canadiens failed because the paperwork was submitted at 3:01 p.m., one minute past the March 6 deadline.
Former general manager Brad Treliving had arranged the deal to send Knies to the Canadiens in exchange for top prospect Alexander Zharovsky, another prospect, and two first-round picks, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.
Knies, 23, is under contract through the 2030-31 season at $7.75 million annually, though he posted a team-worst minus-30 rating last season as the Maple Leafs slumped out of the playoffs.
While Friedman suggested the Canadiens might want to revisit the deal, he noted current general manager John Chayka likely has no interest in moving Knies for the original terms Treliving had negotiated.
Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin requesting a trade has shifted league-wide strategy, potentially prompting the Maple Leafs to hold off on further deals while assessing chances of acquiring the Olympic gold medalist.
