Massive 300-Foot U.S. Flag Draped over Hoover Dam for America's 250th Anniversary
The invite-only ceremony featured a football-field-sized flag and red, blue and white lighting as officials launched the national anniversary campaign.
On Memorial Day, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo and Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs officially kicked off America250 at Hoover Dam, featuring a massive 300-foot-wide American flag draped across the structure.
Built during the Great Depression, the dam generates hydroelectricity for 1.3 million people across Nevada, Arizona, and California, cementing its role as a vital regional infrastructure achievement.
The display uses more than 550 automated LED lights powered by the dam, while the 2,000-pound American flag required five days of sewing and will remain illuminated until July 4.
Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority CEO Steve Hill stated the dam "has always stood for something bigger than just infrastructure alone," noting its role in creating Boulder City and modern Las Vegas.
For the next 250 years, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs emphasized America will prosper by harnessing the "rugged entrepreneurial spirit" that tamed the Colorado River, urging continued partnership to protect this vital lifeline.
A massive concrete structure that symbolized the Americans' determination to overcome the Great Depression is being re-examined as a stage for ‘national pride’ 90 years after its completion. The Hoover Dam, located near Las Vegas, Nevada, has transformed into an icon of American patriotism, covered in giant American flags and dazzling lights to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence this year.
