Hong Kong investigates Louis Vuitton data leak affecting 419,000 customers
HONG KONG, JUL 21 – Hong Kong's privacy watchdog investigates Louis Vuitton for delayed breach notification after personal data of 419,000 customers was exposed in a cyberattack affecting multiple LVMH brands.
- Alarmed by boxes of designer bags, authorities discovered in 2023 that police found a large quantity of Louis Vuitton products at Bei W.’s home, and the Dutch Public Prosecution Service named the fashion house a suspect.
- Under Dutch law, the woman kept each transaction just below the €10,000 reporting threshold, with an employee at Louis Vuitton helping her, according to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service.
- Investigators reported roughly €3 million in criminal proceeds laundered through the Dutch branches of Louis Vuitton, with the Daigou trading system valued at over €74 billion at end of 2023, according to Re-Hub.
- It is unclear whether the Dutch Public Prosecution Service will formally charge Louis Vuitton, as prosecutors consider next steps, and proceedings are not expected to resume until next year.
- Monday , the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data launched an investigation into Louis Vuitton Hong Kong after a data breach affected about 419,000 customers, including a review of delayed notification, the watchdog said.
