Hong Kong fire death toll climbs to 160

DNA and fingerprint tests have identified 120 victims in the Wang Fuk Court fire, with six people still missing amid ongoing recovery and investigation efforts.

  • On Dec 9, police said the death toll at Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po, Hong Kong rose to 160, with six people still listed as missing, Ms Tsang Shuk-yin confirmed.
  • Authorities said the renovation materials, including protective netting and foam boards, failed fire-resistance standards and contributed to the fire's spread at the estate.
  • Forensic teams confirmed identities of 120 out of 160 dead via DNA or fingerprint testing, and revealed one set of remains included two people, raising the toll from 159 to 160.
  • Removing the bamboo scaffolding will begin as the next recovery step after recovery crews found a piece of suspected human bone, while police arrested 15 construction workers and six others.
  • Hong Kong leader John Lee said a judge-led independent committee was announced last week to investigate the November 26 blaze, described as the deadliest since 1980.
