The cabinet of the previous Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) was aware of the controversial registration policy in the municipality of Aalter from the start. Foreigners had to wait 9 times longer than Belgians for their domiciliation, Pano and De Morgen reported in March. Now it appears that the cabinet had been aware of this for a year, but did nothing. Minister Verlinden says that she herself was not aware of it.
In February 2024, two months after the first complaint from a citizen about the registration policy in Aalter, the FPS Home Affairs informed the then Minister of Home Affairs Annelies Verlinden (CD&V).
