Hogan says he won’t run again for Maryland governor, other public office
Larry Hogan ends speculation about a 2026 gubernatorial run, urging new leadership and reform such as term limits and nonpartisan redistricting in Maryland.
- On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, Larry Hogan, former Maryland governor, announced in a social media post and The Baltimore Sun op-ed that he will not seek a third term, ending comeback speculation.
- Hogan said, `I care deeply about the state of Maryland, and I remain concerned about the direction of our nation's politics, but I have no intention of running for office again. It was an honor to serve, but it's time to look forward, not back,` and `I will continue to speak out on issues that matter, especially when our record has proven a better path forward. And I will be working to inspire and support the next generation of civic leaders,` Hogan said.
- After serving from 2015 to 2023, Hogan served as Maryland’s 62nd governor and was the first Republican reelected since 1954, but he lost a 2024 Senate race to Angela Alsobrooks and co-chaired the No Labels movement.
- Hogan’s decision clears the field for Moore, likely benefiting Gov. Wes Moore while Moore’s campaign reported raising $7 million in 2025 and declined to comment on Hogan’s exit.
- Survey data indicate strong past approval for Hogan as a May Ragnar Research Associates survey found 76% `totally approved` of his job, while Gonzales Research and Media Services showed Moore leading 52% to 38% with 10% undecided.
