Historian's 18-year-long quest to honour Australia's 'Second Anzacs'
Historian Dr Michael Bendon discovered a WWII shipwreck in 2008 that carried Australian soldiers during the 1941 Greece and Crete campaigns, sparking nearly 20 years of research on Australia's 'Second Anzacs'.
Over 18,200 Australians fought in Greece and Crete in 1941 to support the Allied campaign against Nazi Germany, with many captured or killed after German forces overwhelmed them.
The shipwreck TLCA6 was part of an evacuation flotilla bombed by German dive-bombers on May 29, 1941, with no casualties as soldiers were onshore waiting to be evacuated.
Dr Bendon works to honor the often overlooked 'Second Anzacs' by compiling a Nominal Roll and raising awareness about their contributions and sacrifices during WWII.
