Hiker falls down West Shore mountain cliff, airlifted to hospital
Firefighters and search crews spent nearly 9 hours rescuing the 59-year-old hiker before a military helicopter flew him to hospital, officials said.
A 59-year-old hiker was airlifted to a Victoria hospital on Tuesday after falling 15 metres down a cliff on Sugarloaf Mountain, with the Metchosin Fire Department, Metchosin Search and Rescue, and the Royal Canadian Air Force executing the rescue.
Crews spent nine hours on the trail system, hiking in equipment to package the patient before the 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron performed a long-line aerial extraction using a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter.
Bystanders played a critical role by locating the injured hiker and remaining by his side until professional teams arrived. Metchosin Fire stated, "Your assistance and care made a meaningful difference."
The patient sustained multiple injuries during the fall but remains in stable condition at the hospital, while the Metchosin Fire Department expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the successful operation.
This rescue marks the second cliff-side operation Metchosin Fire has conducted this month, following an October 5 incident where firefighters rappelled down a Metchosin cliff-face to rescue a domestic goat trapped on a ledge.
