Stellantis workers set to vote on potential strike action this weekend
The union says strike authorization would give it leverage as negotiations stay stalled over job security and the future of the Brampton plant.
On Saturday and Sunday, more than 9,000 Unifor members will vote on whether to authorize a strike against Stellantis as contract negotiations remain at a standstill.
Negotiations came to a standstill on Sept. 11 when Stellantis signed a memorandum of understanding to sell its idled Brampton facility to Roshel, following the Sept. 20 expiry of their collective agreement.
The Brampton plant has been idled since 2023, resulting in more than 2,000 layoffs after Stellantis moved Jeep Compass production to the United States, prompting a grievance from Unifor.
Unifor National President Lana Payne urged Industry Minister Joly to block the potential sale, citing concerns over previous commitments to Ottawa, while Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin stated the company remains committed to bargaining in good faith.
Roshel CEO Roman Shimonov said the company plans to establish a Canadian Centre of Excellence for Defence Manufacturing in Brampton, potentially hiring laid-off workers through the Light Utility Vehicles program as soon as this year.
