Massive Ukrainian Cargo Plane Pays Vancouver Island Air Force Base a Thanksgiving Visit
The RCAF said the aircraft helped move personnel and equipment as it used commercial cargo support when military airlift was unavailable.
On Monday, October 12, an Antonov An-124-100M cargo aircraft made its first recorded landing at 19 Wing Comox on Vancouver Island, remaining overnight before departing early Tuesday.
The Royal Canadian Air Force likely contracted the aircraft to support military personnel movement when the military's CC-177 Globemaster fleet was occupied elsewhere.
Named 'Mykolaiv' after a Ukrainian city, the AN-124 features a 73-metre wingspan and 120,000 kg payload, with a distinctive nose that lifts for loading oversized equipment.
As part of Antonov Airlines' "Be Brave Like Ukraine" campaign, each aircraft in their fleet bears the name of a city resisting Russian occupation.
Records dating to 2017 reveal this visit marks the largest plane ever to land at 19 Wing Comox, cementing the aircraft's status as a symbol of national pride.
