Hideo Kojima Updates 'OD' Development During Tokyo Game Show; Production Is "Progressing Smoothly"
Kojima said the studio feared collapse after Sony ended funding, and Xbox quickly picked up the project, which now may skip PlayStation.
- Last week, Xbox and Kojima Productions announced that Xbox will publish Physint, the upcoming action espionage game. This follows Sony's decision to exit the project earlier this year, shifting publishing responsibilities to Microsoft.
- During a June Zoom call, Sony notified developer Hideo Kojima that it would no longer fund the project. Kojima feared the sudden loss could force layoffs at his studio, which employs roughly 200 people.
- After approaching Xbox, Kojima received an enthusiastic response to his pitch. An Xbox spokesperson said, "Betting on Kojima-san is an easy call. We believe in his team's ability to build triple-A games with groundbreaking, new IP."
- Addressing speculation about the publisher switch, Kojima Productions issued a statement asserting the studio remains in a "healthy, profitable state." The company added that development continues with Xbox while emphasizing its PlayStation relationship remains strong.
- Decisions regarding potential PlayStation releases now rest with Microsoft, Kojima noted. The studio continues production on Physint alongside OD, a horror project also being developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios.
