All We Know so Far as Reform Leader Resigns as Clacton MP Triggering by-Election
Reeves said she will not block Farage’s resignation, ending calls to stop the move and clearing the way for a Clacton by-election.
On Wednesday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves accepted Nigel Farage's resignation as MP for Clacton-on-Sea, officially triggering a by-election in the constituency.
Farage resigned amid a parliamentary standards investigation into a £5 million donation from Christopher Harborne, which he dismissed as an 'establishment hit job.'
While Farage framed the contest as a 'people versus the establishment' vote, all main parties including Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens, and Restore Britain ruled out standing candidates.
Branding the move a 'desperate distraction,' Reeves said Farage can 'spend the summer arguing with a bin,' while the by-election will cost taxpayers over £400,000.
If re-elected, Farage faces potential recall procedures should investigations confirm rule breaches, in a constituency with a history of electing UKIP and Conservative MPs before switching to Reform.
