Here's where ICE is buying up warehouses to make detention centers
The agency plans to turn vacant industrial buildings into facilities that can hold thousands of people as it accelerates its deportation push.
- Since January, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has purchased at least 11 massive warehouses across eight states as part of a $38.3 billion plan to overhaul its detention network and accelerate mass deportations.
- The Trump administration seeks to consolidate detention into 34 federal facilities to support President Donald Trump's goal of removing 1 million immigrants annually, a cornerstone of his mass deportation agenda.
- Communities and lawmakers, including Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, have united against the sites, with Shapiro stating he will use "every legal power" to prevent their placement in his state.
- Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin is reviewing policies from former Secretary Kristi Noem, while reports this week suggest the agency may temporarily pause warehouse acquisitions pending that review.
- Detention Watch Network advocates warn that converting industrial warehouses poses safety risks, noting more than a dozen detainee deaths this year alone amid concerns about inadequate infrastructure.
