British Open Comes to Life with 62s by Herbert and Burns. DeChambeau Penalized Two Shots
On Friday, Australian golfer Lucas Herbert shot a record-equaling 28 on his opening nine holes at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, taking the outright lead at the British Open.
The 30-year-old, who plays for the LIV Golf team Ripper, began his second round at even par, five shots off the pace before his remarkable surge.
Herbert carded six birdies, including an 11-metre putt, to match the record for the lowest nine-hole score at The Open, previously set by Denis Durnian in 1983.
Leading the field, Herbert moved two shots ahead of overnight leader Jackson Suber, while fellow American Bud Cauley sits at three under through 11 holes.
Elsewhere, England's Matt Wallace posted a clubhouse lead at four under, while Masters champion Rory McIlroy struggled at two over, near the projected cut line.
