Her research revealed a safety concern with a vaccine. Then the NIH pulled her funding
- On March 10, Dr. Nisha Acharya received a letter from the National Institutes of Health terminating her grant to study the safety and effectiveness of a vaccine recommended for adults 50 and older in the US.
- The grant was canceled due to a change in NIH policy, which now prioritizes other research activities over those focused on vaccine hesitancy and improving vaccine interest, following Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s appointment as head of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
- Dr. Acharya, a clinician scientist and ophthalmologist at the University of California at San Francisco, was using the almost $2 million grant, which covered 35% of her salary, to study questions related to the Shingrix vaccine and its potential link to the reawakening of the virus in the eyes, a concern among ophthalmologists.
- Acharya stated that she doesn't have a way of continuing this work, while an HHS official stated, regarding the grant terminations, that they will leave no stone unturned in identifying the root causes of the chronic disease epidemic, as part of their mission to Make America Healthy Again.
- As a result of the grant cancellation, which wipes out over three years of funding, Acharya plans to lay off three full-time employees who were analyzing data related to the vaccine, and she intends to appeal the decision, as many universities are coping with similar grant cancellations.
