Henry Nowak Inquest to Probe Police Actions Before 18-Year-Old's Death
Coroner Jason Pegg said a jury will examine whether police actions caused or contributed to the death of 18-year-old Henry Nowak.
On Thursday, Area coroner Jason Pegg ordered a jury inquest into the death of 18-year-old Henry Nowak to determine whether police actions or treatment delays contributed to his death.
Nowak was stabbed by Vickrum Digwa on December 3, 2025, after which police handcuffed the dying teenager and ignored his pleas that he could not breathe, with one officer replying, "Don't think you have, mate."
Because Nowak was in state custody when he died, Pegg said the investigative duty under Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights has been triggered, requiring public scrutiny of broader circumstances.
Violent demonstrations occurred outside Southampton Police Station on Tuesday, with the Independent Office for Police Conduct expected to report on the case within the next three months.
The full inquest is scheduled for September 20, 2027, though Pegg expressed hope that the date might be brought forward to allow Nowak's family to participate fully in the proceedings.
