Monarch Butterflies Populations Have Plummeted over Last Three Decades

EASTERN NORTH AMERICA, JUL 28 – Community science programs report 16,000 monarch sightings and 68,000 milkweed plants in 2024, aiming to counter an 80% decline in eastern monarch populations since the 1990s.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Eastern Monarch population has dropped from around 383 million to under 45 million from 1996 to 2020.
