Hegseth goes to Guantanamo as Trump tries to hastily expand site to house 30K deported migrants

US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth was visiting the Guantánamo military base on Tuesday 25 February. This base on Cuban island was once reserved for detainees suspected of Islamist terrorism, after 11 September, but President Trump now wants to turn it into a giant detention centre for 30,000 illegal migrants.

This will be Hegseth's first trip to GTMO since his confirmation in January.

“This is a critical temporary crossing point in the processing of these dangerous illegal immigrants in preparation for their possible removal from our country,” Hegseth said on X, also releasing images of the displacement, his first on the basis since taking office in January.
