Heavy rain and flooding kill at least 62 in northern India
- At least 62 people died following three days of heavy rain and flooding in Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Monday, with more than 40 injured and nearly 1,000 homes damaged.
- The weather department recorded 775 per cent more rainfall than normal between September 25 and 27, with 56 of the 75 districts receiving rainfall classified as "large excess" in the state.
- Relief commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said district administrations are assessing crop losses while conducting rescue operations; flooding in Odisha prompted evacuation of about 75,000 people near the Mahanadi river system.
- Across the international border, Nepal reported 21 weather-related deaths between Thursday and Sunday, with five people remaining missing and five injured after floods and landslides damaged 194 homes.
- According to senior scientist Atul Kumar Singh at the Regional Meteorological Centre, rainfall is expected to ease Monday as the weather system over the Bay of Bengal weakens, though Nepal continues recovering from August floods that killed more than 1,400 people.
