Healthy Britons to get Alzheimer's drug in trial to prevent dementia
- The Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has become the first in Europe to join the PrevenTron trial, offering the drug Trontinemab to healthy adults at high risk of Alzheimer.
- Developed by Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche, Trontinemab is delivered via IV to clear beta amyloid buildup in the brain, a protein that slows cell function before symptoms appear.
- The clinical trial is recruiting 1,600 healthy adults aged 55 to 80 internationally, using blood tests to identify participants with the p-tau217 biomarker most likely to benefit.
- Chief investigator Professor Ramin Nilforooshan said the trial "addresses a different question, whether we can act earlier, before symptoms begin" to help millions affected by Alzheimer.
- An estimated 982,000 people live with dementia in the UK, with Alzheimer accounting for 60% to 80% of cases, according to the NHS, with prevalence highest among people over 65.
