Trump administration to shut down LGBTQ youth suicide hotline
UNITED STATES, JUN 17 – The Trump administration will end the specialized LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention service on July 17 despite data showing 41% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered suicide, advocates say.
- The Trump administration has directed the discontinuation of the specialized support service for LGBTQ+ youth within the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, effective July 17, 2024.
- This decision comes after a January directive that acknowledged only male and female sexes and intends to consolidate services and lower expenses, according to SAMHSA.
- Launched in 2022, the LGBTQ+ youth program handled over 1.3 million contacts and averaged about 2,100 daily requests, providing tailored support to a high-risk group.
- Jaymes Black, CEO of the Trevor Project, emphasized that suicide prevention should focus on individuals rather than political agendas and described the elimination of this bipartisan service as baffling.
- The shutdown has drawn bipartisan criticism and raises concerns for vulnerable LGBTQ+ youth, who face significantly higher risks of suicidal thoughts and attempts.
