Alberta announces plan to add 1K hospital beds, boost surgeries; critics say plan lacks action and transparency
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says a new plan to add more than 1,000 hospital beds and deliver 50,000 additional surgeries will ease pressure across the health-care system, while critics argue the announcement lacks clear timelines, workforce planning and transparency.
However, this decrease in hospitalization capacity, of the order of -0.5 per cent, is less marked than the previous two years (-1.2 per cent in 2023, -1.8 per cent in 2022) or even before the health crisis.
In 2024, 2,000 beds were closed (-0.5%), a decrease slower than the previous two years (-1.2% in 2023, -1.8% in 2022) or even before the health crisis (-0.9% per year on average between 2013 and 2019).
In 2025, more than 2,300 people were in this condition, an increase of approximately 20% faced two years ago.
