HD Hyundai Heavy develops ammonia-powered vessels
The vessels are the first of four ordered by Exmar and feature safety systems to handle ammonia, a carbon-free fuel, company officials said.
- On Thursday, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a naming ceremony in Ulsan for the world's first two ammonia-fueled gas carriers, Antwerpen and Arlon, built for EXMAR LPG France.
- Ammonia is emerging as a critical carbon-free maritime fuel, with the International Energy Agency projecting it will account for 46 percent of global marine fuel demand by 2050.
- Each 190-meter vessel features three cargo tanks with 46,000 cubic meters of capacity, alongside real-time ammonia leak detectors and selective catalytic reduction systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
- Joo Won-ho, president of HHI's naval and medium-sized ship business unit, stated the company will "continue to lead the global eco-friendly ship market through technological innovation," with orders for eight ammonia-powered vessels.
- The first two vessels are scheduled for delivery in May and July, marking the start of a four-carrier project ordered in 2023 and 2024 to support the transition to carbon-neutral shipping.
