Musk's AI Chatbot Grok Reportedly Encouraged Trump to Capture Venezuela's President

Trump’s advisers worry the chatbot is shaping his views on Venezuela and AI policy as he weighs public anxiety and market risks.

  • President Donald Trump is increasingly relying on Elon Musk's Grok to shape presidential decisions, according to Time, following a clandestine December 2025 Oval Office meeting where he spent hours questioning the chatbot.
  • During that meeting, Trump asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Nicolás Maduro. The chatbot responded that Maduro was "a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator" and many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall.
  • The following month, Trump ordered a mission to seize Maduro, and celebrations broke out in the streets. After the predictions proved accurate, Trump apparently "came away thinking Grok was ingenious," a source told Time.
  • That episode fed internal anxieties about AI hype propping up markets and China gaining a decisive edge in infrastructure. One aide told Time that Trump "just really just didn't seem to care," because his mind was already made up.
  • Earlier this week, the Pentagon announced that Musk and Anduril's Palmer Luckey have been tapped to co-lead a study on battlefield technology, building on the military's use of Gov Grok to strike targets during the Iran War.
