After Recount, Massachusetts State Sen. Brownsberger Defeats Boston Mayor Wu-Backed Challenger
Thousands of ballots are being hand-counted as the race remains within a few dozen votes, with both campaigns watching the districtwide recount.
On Thursday, challenger Daniel Lander conceded the Suffolk and Middlesex District race to incumbent state Senator William Brownsberger following a recount that confirmed his narrow victory.
The contest served as a proxy battle between Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the state Senate, as Wu backed Lander to oust Brownsberger for helping to block her property tax legislation in late 2024.
Eleven state senators joined Brownsberger at Boston City Hall during the recount to demonstrate support, while the final tally confirmed his 35-vote lead over Lander.
Lander expressed pride in his campaign, stating he sent a "loud and clear" message to leadership about the need for greater urgency in addressing state problems despite the loss.
With this result, Mayor Wu has lost all three state Senate races she endorsed this election cycle, reinforcing the standing of the state Senate's leadership and its incumbent members.
