Hamilton knife attack puts four people in hospital
Police say a 23-year-old is in custody as four victims were hospitalized, including one critically injured, and investigators seek witnesses.
On Saturday around 8:55pm, a 23-year-old man was arrested following a "large-scale incident" in Maeroa, Hamilton, that left four people hospitalized with suspected knife wounds.
Police say one victim fled the assault on foot to a nearby property, where an occupant allegedly fired a gun. "It is alleged that a firearm was discharged," Sergeant Luke Thompson said.
Four ambulances and two rapid response units transported the victims to Waikato hospital, where one remains in critical condition and three face "non-life threatening" injuries.
The arrested man will face assault charges at Hamilton District Court on Monday, while Waikato Duty Inspector Karl Thornton confirmed an increased police presence will continue across Maeroa.
Police have cordoned off the area to investigate and do not believe there is any ongoing threat to public safety. Anyone with information should contact authorities, referencing file number PO67322399.
