Hamas Co-Founder in West Bank Released without Charge After 2.5 Years in Israeli Jail
The 71-year-old was held without charge under renewable six-month orders, a system Israel says prevents attacks and critics say is abused.
On Thursday, Israeli authorities released Hamas co-founder Hassan Yousef from administrative detention in the West Bank after holding him without trial for more than two years.
Israel detained Yousef in October 2023 following the October 7 attacks, utilizing a system that allows renewable six-month periods of imprisonment without formal charges.
Following his release near Hebron, family members took the 71-year-old leader to a hospital in Ramallah, where footage showed him resting with an injured arm.
Hamas issued an official statement confirming the release and noting that Yousef has spent more than 20 years in prison cumulatively as a senior leader who co-founded the organization in the 1980s.
Yousef remains estranged from his eldest son, Mosab Hassan Yousef, who spied for Israel's Shin Bet for a decade before relocating to the United States and writing the book 'Son of Hamas.
