Half of Mississippi schools graded A or B, Clinton & Madison Co. in top 10

More than half of schools and districts earned A or B grades under Mississippi’s tougher accountability system, setting a new baseline for performance.

  • On Thursday, the Mississippi Department of Education released the 2025-26 accountability grades. "The 2025-26 grades set a strong baseline for continued progress," State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lance Evans said.
  • Mandated by state law, the new standards were implemented after student proficiency rates exceeded 75%. The Mississippi State Board of Education approved new A-F cut scores in November 2025, making these results not directly comparable to previous years.
  • Statewide performance data shows 53.9% of schools and 50.7% of districts earned an A or B rating. Additionally, 31 of 148 school districts achieved an A, according to official reports.
  • Bay St. Louis-Waveland School District topped the state with 773 points. Conversely, the McComb School District and South Pike School District dropped a letter grade following the implementation of the new accountability standards.
  • The updated accountability model includes a new Readiness Index. This index tracks ACT, SAT, and career and technical education programs to better measure student preparation for post-secondary education and workforce entry.
