Hackers Breach Senior US Space Force Official’s Instagram Account and Post Iranian Propaganda
Hackers used Meta’s AI assistant to reset passwords and briefly posted anti-U.S. propaganda before the accounts were secured, Meta said.
- On Sunday, hackers breached the Instagram account of Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force John Bentivegna, posting pro-Iran propaganda and anti-US messages until 1 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday.
- This incident is the latest in a series of cyberattacks targeting US military personnel during the ongoing conflict with Iran. The Space Force previously used "non-kinetic effects" to hamper Iran's defenses, Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine said.
- Posts on Bentivegna's account included footage of late Iranian official Ali Larijani and audio from "Hanoi Hannah," an infamous Vietnam War propagandist. The stories featured riffs on "Game of Thrones" alongside anti-American messages.
- Bentivegna posted on Facebook that he was working to regain access and advised colleagues: "If you receive any direct messages, requests, links, or unusual posts from that account, please do not engage with them." Space Force and the Department of the Air Force did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
- Beyond social media hacks, US Central Command warned Congress in April that adversaries are exploiting commercial location data to track US personnel. Pentagon officials have known about this tracking risk for at least 10 years.

Hackers breach senior U.S. Space Force official’s Instagram account and post Iranian propaganda
Hackers breached a senior U.S. Space Force official’s Instagram account and temporarily posted a string of pro-Iran and anti-U.S. propaganda on Sunday, some of it invoking the Vietnam War.
Images of an Iranian leader killed in the ongoing war were posted on John Bentivegna's Instagram. Director of the FBI had already been targeted by Iranian hackers in March.
A post promoting Iran suddenly appeared on the social media account of a non-commissioned officer belonging to the U.S. Space Force. It appears to have been a hacking incident, and the content even included instructions for U.S. soldiers to "escape from the sinking ship." The U.S. Space Force [changes] Iran's air defense system
