Guyana presses Venezuela on border gunfire as they vie over an energy-rich region
Guyana said one soldier was wounded and urged Venezuela to stop future attacks on troops and civilians as the border dispute moves through the court.
On Thursday, Guyana's Foreign Ministry demanded that Venezuela investigate two recent shootings targeting troops along the Cuyuni River, including one incident that left a soldier with gunshot wounds.
These border tensions occur during a century-old dispute over the Essequibo region, which Venezuela claims despite an 1899 arbitration decision drawing the border in favor of Guyana.
Soldiers returned fire in all cases, the Guyanese Defense Force reported, adding that similar shootings have injured troops over the past two years, including one wounding eight soldiers.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez defended Venezuela's claim at the International Court of Justice on Monday, arguing that political negotiations—rather than a judicial ruling—must resolve the territorial conflict.
