Nigeria: Gunmen Attack Convoy of Soludo's Chief of Staff, Kill Police Officers, Others

The state government said police are searching for the attackers after the ambush killed two officers and two aides.

  • On Sunday at about 9 p.m., gunmen ambushed the convoy of Chief Ben Nwankwo, Chief of Staff to Governor Charles Soludo, along the Amansea-Ndiora-Ndiukwuenu-Awa-Ufuma Road in Anambra State, killing four people.
  • Security in Anambra State has deteriorated amid frequent attacks by armed hoodlums; while the Indigenous People of Biafra is often blamed for violence in the South-east, the group has repeatedly denied involvement.
  • The victims included two police officers and two officials attached to the office of Chief Ben Nwankwo. Anambra State Commissioner for Information Law Mefor confirmed the attack on Monday, expressing the government's shock.
  • Police Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu issued a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the attackers, launching "Operation Fish Them Out" on Monday, vowing that criminal elements would no longer exploit the cover of night.
  • Orutugu cautioned commuters to be vigilant on the isolated Amansea-Ufuma Road, warning that attackers sometimes disguise themselves in security uniforms and urging heightened caution, especially when moving through the axis at night.
