- Released in 2006, the film earned $83 million and received a historic 22-minute standing ovation at Cannes; Del Toro has frequently denounced generative technology, saying he would "rather die" than use it in filmmaking.
- To avoid artificial tools, the director enlisted about 1,000 people to rotoscope the film by hand, a process exceeding 300 days, with Del Toro and distributor Cineverse personally funding the expensive manual conversion.
- Presented in 4K and HDR, the re-release reflects Del Toro's emphasis on "protecting the beauty and the redeeming power of art" and preserving traditional craft for future generations.
