Guerin family urges murderer to acknowledge his actions
The family says an admission from Brian Meehan would matter as the Parole Board weighs release after 27 years in prison.
The family of murdered journalist Veronica Guerin is urging Brian Meehan to acknowledge his role in her killing as he approaches potential release from prison within the next year.
Meehan, the only person convicted for Guerin's death, drove the stolen motorcycle carrying the gunman who shot the 37-year-old reporter on the Naas Road in Dublin on June 26, 1996.
Currently serving his life sentence in an open facility, Meehan has spent nearly 27 years behind bars and receives gradual temporary release as part of his rehabilitation process.
Brother Jimmy Guerin believes his sister was denied justice, saying an acknowledgment 'wouldn't be a great comfort, but it would be something small' from Meehan before release.
Marking the 30th anniversary of the murder, officials note Guerin's death triggered significant legislative reforms and established the Criminal Assets Bureau, which has returned more than €220m to the State.
