Guam Faces Third Powerful Typhoon in Months as Champi Approaches
Officials warned of islandwide typhoon-force winds and up to 20 inches of rain as the storm strengthened and moved south of Guam.
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero placed Guam in Condition of Readiness 1 at 1 p.m. Saturday, signaling that destructive winds are possible within 12 hours as residents prepare for potentially damaging conditions.
Typhoon Champi strengthened from a tropical storm Saturday morning and is forecast to pass just south of Guam on Sunday as a Category 2 typhoon, with typhoon-force winds expected islandwide.
The National Weather Service expects maximum winds of 80 to 110 mph and gusts up to 150 mph, while officials are opening 13 shelters and urging residents to stock food and water for at least seven to 10 days.
Coastal flood and high surf warnings remain in effect through early Monday, with breaking waves up to 35 feet possible and authorities warning of likely disruptions to power, water, and communications.
The American Red Cross noted this is the third strong typhoon to affect the region since April, while forecasters project sustained winds of 155 mph by 4 a.m. Monday as Champi continues strengthening after passing Guam.
