Groups call on Ottawa to reverse course on environmental policy
Some of Canada's largest environmental groups urged the Ottawa government to reverse recent rollbacks on environmental policies, citing risks to climate and environmental protection.
Ottawa proposed approving projects before full review and exempting certain projects from laws protecting species at risk, according to discussion papers released last month.
Environmental groups warned these changes could endanger some whale species and planned meetings with the Prime Minister's Office and Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin during a 30-day consultation period.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said the government is not discarding environmental protections and highlighted its new nature strategy.
Several of Canada's largest environmental associations visited Parliament Hill on Wednesday to urge the Liberal government to come back to what they consider to be a setback in environmental policy.
