Michigan Woman Whose Name Inspired Band to Become Greta Van Fleet Dies at 95
The Michigan musician and community volunteer was a prolific multi-instrumentalist whose name became linked to the Grammy-winning rock band.
Gretna Van Fleet, the Frankenmuth resident whose name inspired the rock band Greta Van Fleet, died Monday at age 95 at a senior living facility in Frankenmuth.
In summer 2012, teenage band members adopted her moniker after a serendipitous moment when a member's grandfather mentioned her name during rehearsal preparations.
Beyond her accidental fame, Van Fleet was a talented musician who played saxophone, violin, and tuba, and served as a dedicated volunteer at Frankenmuth United Methodist Church.
Visitation is scheduled for 5–7 p.m. on May 26 at the Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, with a funeral service at 11 a.m. on May 27 at the Methodist church.
As of Wednesday, the Grammy-winning band has not posted a public reaction on social media to the death of the woman whose name they carried to international rock stardom.
