Greggs announces trial of new express checkouts for first time to combat queues
The bakery chain is testing self-checkout units to speed up grab-and-go purchases, with customer response at the first site to guide wider rollout.
Greggs has opened Greggs Express, its first self-service unit, at Motor Fuel Group's petrol forecourt outside Glasgow Airport, with rollout expected throughout the year at multiple travel hubs across the UK.
The trial follows Greggs' recent security measures locking items behind counters at six stores exposed to 'higher levels of anti-social behaviour' to combat theft, as the bakery seeks new operational formats.
Property director Tony Rowson said the units allow customers to "grab their favourite bake or serve coffee themselves, ideal for customers on the move," while the format delivers "speed and convenience" through self-checkout.
Customer behaviour at the Glasgow Airport forecourt will be analysed to determine if the 'help yourself' method succeeds before larger expansion, with additional units planned across MFG locations in coming months.
Greggs Express complements Bitesize Greggs, its smaller shop format with three locations, positioning self-service as part of broader estate growth while maintaining product quality and value customers expect.
