Canada’s emissions reductions slowed in 2024, federal data shows
Oil and gas growth offset cuts in electricity, transportation and buildings, leaving national emissions 0.3% lower than 2023, the report said.
- Canada's 2024 greenhouse gas emissions fell 0.3 per cent to 685 MtCO2eq, according to the National Inventory Report released Wednesday, placing emissions 10 per cent below 2005 levels.
- While electricity generation slashed emissions by 57 per cent since 2005, oil and gas production emissions rose, with oilsands production increasing from 33 MtCO2eq in 2005 to 92 MtCO2eq in 2024.
- "More oilsands production, with very few controls on their emissions, is offsetting the gains," Dave Sawyer, principal economist at the Canadian Climate Institute, said, warning emissions will stay flat without action.
- Canada committed to reducing emissions to 40 and 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 under the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, fulfilling obligations under the Paris Agreement.
- Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin is set to travel to Berlin and Paris next week following the report's release without public announcement, as Canada faces international scrutiny over emissions targets.
