Greece Slapped with €5.5 Mln EU Fine over Ionian Island Landfill

The European Court of Justice has ordered Greece to pay a substantial fine over the dire state of the Zakynthos landfill, located within the Ionian island’s protected National Marine Park.

According to the decision, Greece had not stopped the operation of a landfill (LIFTING) located in the marine national park of Zakynthos, a natural habitat of the Caretta-Caretta sea turtle - In addition, a fine of 12,500 euros was imposed for each day of delay in compliance with the court decision
