Great Nicobar project meant to benefit Adani, it’s not about defence: Rahul Gandhi
He says the 81,000-crore project will destroy forests and reefs while serving private commercial interests, not the defence needs cited by the Centre.
- On Friday, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged the government's Great Nicobar Island project is a "lie" aimed at benefiting industrialist Gautam Adani rather than serving strategic defense purposes.
- The proposed project spans 166 sq km, requiring the felling of 13,000 hectares of forest for a transshipment port and airport. While Gandhi alleged it is "one of the biggest scams," the Centre has defended the plan citing detailed environmental studies.
- Arguing against the project, Gandhi suggested the government should instead expand INS Baaz, a naval air station in the Nicobar Islands. "There is no need to destroy rainforests for that," he said, noting the Navy has requested this expansion for five years.
- Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge broadened the critique, alleging the government presided over large-scale ecological degradation. He claimed nearly 1.92 lakh hectares of forest land were diverted over 11 years, with more than 1.6 crore trees felled since 2014.
- To mobilize opposition, Gandhi released a 16-minute video of his island visit on World Environment Day, launching an online petition for the campaign reading: "we choose green over greed.
