Kharge Questions Modi, Shah over Failure to Restore Peace in Manipur
Kharge said more than 300 people have died since May 2023 and 24,530 remain in relief camps as he pressed Modi and Shah for action.
On Wednesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over continuing violence in Manipur, asking, "Who will take responsibility for this monumental failure of governance?"
Ethnic unrest has killed 306 people and displaced 66,000 since May 2023, with recent violence intensifying after a Kuki-Zo man was shot dead Tuesday in Kangpokpi and three Meitei men killed Monday in Imphal East.
Demanding decisive security action, the Native People's Committee Manipur began a 48-hour statewide shutdown Monday that closed schools, banks, and transport while exempting essential services and healthcare.
Kharge questioned what happened to the Peace Committee Shah formed in June 2023 and sought updates on the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Gita Mittal Committee's recommendations, citing 24,530 people in relief camps.
Despite President's Rule and leadership changes, the Congress leader argued the BJP-led government failed to ensure law and order, stating, "Manipur deserves justice, dignity, constitutional rights and lasting peace.
