Grandparents of Ethan Ives-Griffiths jailed for two-year-old's murder
Michael and Kerry Ives were sentenced to life with minimum terms of 23 and 17 years for murdering their grandson after weeks of abuse left him severely underweight and injured.
- On October 3, Michael Ives, 47, and Kerry Ives, 46, were sentenced at Mold Crown Court to life terms for the murder of two-year-old Ethan Ives-Griffiths, with minimum terms of 23 and 17 years.
- At their Flintshire home, Ethan Ives-Griffiths collapsed on August 14, 2021 with a catastrophic head injury and died two days later severely dehydrated weighing just 10kg, medical experts found.
- Harrowing CCTV shown at trial captured repeated mistreatment of Ethan, including forced punishment, and Kerry delayed calling emergency services for almost 20 minutes as the 999 call suggested concealment.
- Ethan's family launched a petition with more than 35,000 signatures calling for law change to escalate welfare checks, while Flintshire County Council will co-operate with a review by the North Wales Safeguarding Board expected by the start of 2026.
- Separately, Shannon Ives was jailed for 12 years after conviction for allowing Ethan's death, all three were convicted of child cruelty with concurrent terms, and the grandparents received credit for 578 days already spent in custody.
