Grand Jury Investigating Public Intimidation Allegations Against AG Murrill, Sources Say
Witnesses have been called as jurors consider whether Murrill’s letters and messages amounted to criminal intimidation of seven local officials.
An Orleans Parish grand jury is investigating Attorney General Liz Murrill over alleged intimidation of Mayor Helena Moreno, District Attorney Jason Williams, and five City Council members, according to multiple sources.
Conflict escalated after the Republican-led Legislature removed the city's criminal clerk position, replacing it with a unified office under Chelsea Richard Napoleon, prompting Moreno and Williams to attempt appointing Calvin Johnson as interim clerk.
Murrill sent letters accusing city leaders of helping to "usurp" Napoleon's authority, writing that they had "put your own offices in jeopardy" and directing them to "rescind or suspend" resolutions citing statutes punishable by jail.
Mayor Helena Moreno denounced the letters in an Instagram video, citing laws against public intimidation and stating, "Bottom line: I'm not going to be threatened, I'm not going to be intimidated, and I won't back down."
Criminal District Judge Leon Roche appointed former judge Laurie White as special prosecutor to lead the grand jury probe, an unusual move since District Attorney Jason Williams recused himself and witnesses have appeared for a few weeks.
