Grand jury finds DeSantis administration "misappropriated" $10 million in taxpayer money to Hope Florida
The report says the money was routed through nonprofits and PACs, with $8.5 million landing in James Uthmeier’s committee, officials said.
- On Wednesday, a state grand jury report found Governor Ron DeSantis' administration "misappropriated" $10 million in taxpayer money by diverting funds from a Medicaid settlement to the Hope Florida Foundation to finance political activities.
- The funds originated from a $67 million settlement with Centene Corporation, which the administration quietly rewrote in September 2024 to channel $10 million into the Hope Florida Foundation instead of returning it to state coffers.
- Within 25 days, the Hope Florida Foundation distributed the money as two $5 million grants to organizations that transferred $8.5 million to Keep Florida Clean, a political committee chaired by Attorney General James Uthmeier, to oppose Amendment 3.
- Although the panel concluded the money was "plainly used for political purposes," it found insufficient evidence to charge anyone criminally because no officials would "take responsibility" for the diversion decision.
- Governor Ron DeSantis dismissed the report as a "hoax," while the grand jury recommended the Florida Legislature enact stricter laws to monitor taxpayer funds and prevent future misuse of state settlements.
