Graham reverses: ‘I’m not a real advocate of taking Kharg Island’
Senator Lindsey Graham reversed his position on Monday, stating he no longer advocates seizing Kharg Island during a Hannity interview, proposing instead to destroy the facility from the air.
In March, Graham had implored President Donald Trump to seize the island, which processes about 90% of Iran's oil exports, comparing the operation to the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Aerial destruction would accomplish his goals, Graham argues, including regaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and bringing Israel and Saudi Arabia back to the peace table.
The U.S. and Iran observe a tenuous ceasefire while negotiating to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with Brent crude futures soaring to around $114 a barrel.
Negotiations are nearing a one-page memo to end the war, though President Trump has threatened to resume bombing if demands are not met.
