- On Thursday, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a meeting in New Delhi to review Himalayan States' preparedness against Glacial Lake Outburst Floods and snow avalanches, with officials from Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir attending.
- Mohan instructed officials to move beyond response-oriented measures toward risk-informed planning, while directing states to expedite progress on GLOF mitigation projects sanctioned by the Central Government in 2024.
- Attendees reviewed early warning systems, flow path identification, and evacuation preparedness. Mohan stated, "The states and UTs were advised to maintain close coordination among state agencies, district administrations and scientific and technical institutions so that warnings are acted upon promptly and effectively."
- Instructions focused on regular reviews and addressing gaps in early warning dissemination, requiring States and UTs to ensure mitigation strategies translate into concrete actions at local and district levels.
- Ongoing inter-agency coordination will strengthen response mechanisms in vulnerable Himalayan regions, with the Ministry of Home Affairs mandating continuous monitoring of glacial lakes and avalanche-prone areas going forward.
