Greg Abbott Expands Task Force Targeting Repeat Offenders From Houston to Other Large Cities
The task force has led to 728 arrests and seized more than 225,000 lethal doses of fentanyl, state data shows.
- On Wednesday, Governor Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to immediately expand the Texas Repeat Offender Task Force to Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas.
- Abbott said the expansion addresses a "revolving door" of repeat offenders who reoffend after release, building on a Houston-area operation that arrested 728 repeat offenders, including 455 identified as high-threat.
- These efforts align with bail reform laws Abbott signed last year, including Senate Bill 9 and Senate Joint Resolution 5, while authorities seized 110 weapons and more than 225,000 lethal doses of fentanyl.
- Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said his department coordinates with the state, declaring, "We're not waiting for violent criminals to strike again. We are going after them, finding them, and taking them off the streets."
- North Texas DPS Region Chief Jeremy Sherrod confirmed proactive enforcement efforts are underway to identify "priority offenders" and conduct intelligence-driven operations removing them from communities.
